Constrained Green Base Station Deployment with Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks

It is anticipated that the eco-friendly sustainable energy sources, e.g., solar, wind and hydro, etc, will be widely used in future green wireless communication networks. In this chapter, the characteristics of green energy are presented, and some existing energy-efficient green approaches for infrastructure-based wireless networks are investigated. The optimal deployment of green base stations (BSs), i.e., BSs powered by green energy, is formulated as a minimal BS placement problem. To minimize the cost of deployed BSs, a heuristic algorithm based on Voronoi diagram, called Two-phase Constrained Green BS Placement algorithm (TCGBP), is proposed. In TCGBP, a minimal set of BSs are selected such that all users are served and their quality of service (QoS) requirements can be fulfilled with the harvested energy of BSs. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm approaches the optimal solution under a variety of network settings with significantly reduced time complexity.
